I need some research help.

I am currently working on a 1:48th scale model of CSS Shenandoah, the Confederate commerce raider of the 1860s. Shenandoah was an early auxiliary steamer whose steam power came from an A&J Inglis engine.

CSS Shenandoah started life as the Sea King. She was built by Alexander Stephens & Co in Glasgow in 1863 and made one trip out to India before being before being puchased by the Confederate Agent in the UK, James Bulloch. As far as I have been able to tell her A&J Inglis engine was manufactured in Belfast and subsequently shipped to Glasgow for installation.

Both the A&J Inglis and Alexander Stephens companies have gone the way of the dinosaur. So, no information is forthcoming from either of them. I contacted the University of Glasgow for help. They had plenty of information on the ship but no information on the engine.

I seem to have hit a dead end. I am having trouble getting any detailed information on this engine and would be very appreciative if anyone on the list could point me in a direction where I might be able to obtain drawings or other technical data.

Thanks in advance.
Mike

You might try contacting the Museum of the Confederacy here in Richmond: http://www.moc.org
They have all sorts of records and, in fact, have an exhibition scheduled to open next month on the Confederate Navy. Whoever is coordinating that exhibit should have lots of contacts who might be helpful.

The Mariners' Museum in Newport News, Va. would also be a likely resource: http://www.mariner.org/
These are the folks conserving the recovered wreckage of the USS Monitor.

Good luck, and let us know how your search goes.

Bill,

Thanks for the info. I'll try them both.
